Child life services
We know that a hospital visit can be a challenging and emotional time for you and your family. We offer your family the support of a certified child life specialist who is educated and trained in the psychosocial and developmental impact of illness and injury.
Child life specialists can help promote effective coping and support you and your family by providing preparation, family-centered care and medical play activities.
Medical preparation and education
Child life specialists provide developmentally appropriate explanations and support to children undergoing a procedure, test, surgery or new diagnosis. By providing the right information based on your child’s unique situation, a child life specialist can help address fear and misconceptions, as well as reduce anxiety.
Support
Through a variety of coping techniques such as alternative focus, relaxation exercises and comfort measures, child life specialists can help reduce the pain and anxiety associated with stressful hospital experiences and procedures.
Family-centered care
Child life specialists incorporate your entire family by advocating for children's rights, educating you about the positive ways to help your child cope with their experience and helping siblings navigate and understand illness and hospitalization.
Play opportunities
Specialists facilitate therapeutic and medical play activities for children to help educate, decrease pain and anxiety, promote normalization, allow for expression, and support optimal development and coping during hospitalizations.
